Highland Detention at Shuman

Highland Detention at Shuman provides Allegheny County with a critical resource for youth needing secure, short-term placement pending further court decisions. With initial capacity to support 12 residents and expansion plans to serve up to 60 youth, the facility emphasizes individualized care that respects each child’s unique needs. The center has been modernized with high-tech safety enhancements, ensuring both security and a therapeutic environment.

Programs and Services

At Highland Detention, our trauma-informed approach prioritizes safety, stability, and individualized support. Key services include:

  • Assessment: Youth participate in health and safety, medical, medication, and nutrition screenings upon admission, as well as other screenings if necessary.
  • Educational Support: Youth receive structured, quality education from Pittsburgh Public Schools, ensuring continuity in learning.
  • Health and Wellness Services: In partnership with UPMC Children’s Hospital, we provide essential medical and behavioral health services tailored to each youth’s needs.
