Kijana, like a lot of youth in Adelphoi’s programs, started life with the odds stacked against him, including a father in prison and a mother struggling with drug addiction. Without a stable home environment, Kijana eventually took to the street and ended up in trouble. After years of bouncing around the juvenile system, from foster care to group home placement, Kijana finally came to Adelphoi.
After completing Adelphoi’s substance abuse program, Kijana graduated to the Independent Living program. He also participated in Adelphoi’s Career Readiness program, working in the Auto Detailing Program. Kijanna did so well in the Auto Detail program that Adelphoi awarded him a scholarship to attend an Auto Detailing Seminar at Detail King of Pittsburgh, where he earned his state Detailer’s Technician Certificate. He shares, “When I first got here, I thought Adelphoi would be like every other placement I have been to and I really didn’t like it. Then, I was able to be involved in the Auto Detail shop and started to work with the landscape crew and I realized Adelphoi was going to be different. The people do care about me. I really enjoyed and became interested in Auto Detailing and time started to go fast.”
Kijana is also enrolled at Westmoreland County Community College (WCCC) through the Adelphoi Promise program where he takes advantage of their on-line sessions. “I always wanted to go to college,” he says. “So when my advisor at Adelphoi told me about the Promise program, I was happy.”
Kijana deserves credit for grabbing hold of the opportunities afforded him through Adelphoi. He now has an OSHA certification, a Detailing Craftsman Certificate, a State Certified Detail Technician Certificate from Detail King of Pittsburgh, and is enrolled at WCCC while working full-time at a local dealership’s body shop. Kijana added, “I want to thank all of the staff and leaders of Adephoi for their support and helping me grow as a young man.”
