Happy Valentine’s Day. Stay warm!

Two Saturdays ago we had our annual board retreat. On hand were twenty volunteers who meet every couple of months to make sure that Adelphoi stays on target and I stay accountable! We heard from Jim Anderson, the retired executive director of the Juvenile Court Judges Commission (“Adelphoi has a great reputation throughout the state”). We discussed the outline of our new strategic plan. But the highlight was probably having lunch with eight of our kids (heard a lot about the food) and several staff members.

Two points for all of you…. first, we explained the continuing challenge of hiring and retaining a solid workforce. We talked about the kind of work you all do and the difficulties. We discussed the challenges of hiring staff and the effect of turnover and open positions on those who are here. And we talked about the progress we’ve made in pay equity but the challenges remaining with state funding and stagnant rates. I think the board understands that these are challenges we must meet if Adelphoi is to maintain its reputation as a good place for kids. I certainly do.

Further, beginning the end of February, if you’re on campus, expect to run into construction. We’ll be renovating the old Flex Gym adjacent to our campus to be our new Health Center, adding a group home next to Benet that will replace Hall Home, and building pavilions and a walking path through campus. This should reduce some of the running around required when staff need to take kids to appointments (especially behavioral health care), help us to provide better services to the kids of Hall Home who currently spend an hour a day on a van, and offer places for staff, kids and families to meet and exercise; good for all of us. These projects are made possible by one-time grants from area foundations!

Nancy, I always look forward to reading your “300 words.” In the hustle and bustle of every day life at Adelphoi we often lose our focus and vision for the future. I appreciate the value you put on the youth we serve! Lots of things are happening all around and I am proud to be part of this momentum.
